How the math works

  1. Your count times the average price for your frame.
  2. The labor share of that, moved by your state's carpenter pay.
  3. A check: the typical price for a job with that many windows.
Windows = count × average for your frame (vinyl $550)
Pay score = state median carpenter pay ÷ $29.12/hr
State part = windows × 15% × (pay score − 1)
Total = windows + state part

Example: the starting answer

The page opens on ten vinyl windows at U.S. average pay. Here is how that adds up.

Starting answer: ten vinyl windows, U.S. average pay
10 vinyl windows$5,500
Total$5,500

Ten falls in the eight to twelve group. HomeAdvisor prices that group at $6,000 to $9,000[1]. Our per-window math is a bit lower. Plan for the higher number.

Count your windows

What it can't tell you

This tool gives a guide, not a quote. It cannot see your walls or your window sizes.

It leaves out impact glass, odd shapes, wood rot repair and new openings. A new opening can cost up to about $5,000[1].

In homes built before 1978[4], the crew must follow lead-safe rules[4]. Ask about it.

How to use your answer

Walk around your home first. Count each window and write down the type.

  1. Put in the count and type.
  2. Pick your state.
  3. Ask three installers to quote the very same windows.
  4. Check that each quote names the frame, glass and count.
  5. Ask about any price far from your range.

Quotes can differ a lot because frames do. A wood window is about $1,250[1]. A vinyl one is about $550[1]. Make sure you compare the same thing.

Also check what the quote says about trim, haul-away and any storm rules for your area. These are the most common reasons two window quotes don't match.

Bachi thinkingQuestions people ask

Where do the prices come from?

The per-window averages by frame come from HomeAdvisor. Vinyl, for example, averages $550[1] per window.

Why does my state change the price?

Labor is about 15%[1] of a window job. We move that part by carpenter pay in your state. The U.S. middle is $29.12/hr[2].

Why show a second range?

HomeAdvisor also prices whole jobs by count. Eight to twelve windows run $6,000[1] to $9,000[1]. It is a good check on the per-window math.

Does it include impact windows?

No. Hurricane-rated windows cost more. In Miami-Dade, they must be on the county's approved product list.

Should I replace all my windows at once?

Not always. Bigger batches cost more in total but less per window in HomeAdvisor's ranges. Twelve to 16 windows run $9,000[1] to $12,000[1].

Does the calculator include labor?

Yes. HomeAdvisor puts labor at about 15%[1] of a window project, and that part moves with your state.

How we made this page

A computer helper (AI) found the public data. It also wrote the first draft.

Then we checked each number against its source. Each number links to that source.

The AI did not make up any number. We did not make up any person or quote.

We do not show experts or reviewers. We show the math, so you can check it.

Sources & how we calculated this

How we calculated this

The calculator multiplies your window count by HomeAdvisor's average price per window for your frame. It moves the labor share of that total by your state's pay score (state median carpenter pay divided by the U.S. median, BLS May 2025). It then shows HomeAdvisor's project range for that many windows as a check.
