Home repair cost guides
Plain answers about what home repairs cost. We start with roofs.

Roof guides

What every guide has
- A quick answer at the top. Each number links to its source.
- Charts and a table of the public numbers, with the time each one covers.
- An example, line by line. You can see how a total is built.
- A list of what the numbers leave out, when no source covers it.
- Ways to pay less, and when a fix makes more sense than a new roof.
- A "Sources & how we calculated this" part, with the date we checked each number.
How to use these guides
A guide helps you judge quotes. It is not a quote.
Averages are for typical jobs. Your roof, your town and your roofer will move the price.
Use a guide to check that each quote lists the same work. Spot a line that looks way off. Ask better questions.
Then get three written quotes from local licensed roofers. Check each license with your state.
Coming next
Water heaters, air conditioners and electric panels. We only put out a guide once we have sources for it.

Sample/coverage: Job costs come from Verisk XactRemodel building-cost data plus a BLS-based price index (per the report's methodology). The report does not publish a count of jobs behind each cost. Costs are for a defined project spec (see the project pages). They include contractor pricing, not just parts and wages.
