How to use a row for your own job
Each row is an average for a typical job. Your job also has to follow your local building code. That can add work the averages don't show.
Here is one example. The 2021 model building code (the IRC) says a new roof means taking the old one off, down to the boards. It also says you can't add a new layer over two or more old ones[10].
So is a quote far below a row? Check if it skips work the code needs where you live.
The roofer matters too. NASCLA is a group of state license offices. It links to each state's license check page[11].
How the Index is built
- Only public numbers with a named source go in. We don't guess, blend sources or fill gaps.
- Each row keeps the source's own time period and sample words. If a source gives no sample size, we say so. We never make one up.
- We check rows on a schedule. We log every change on our corrections page.
- Roofer quotes and prices from homeowners will only go in with permission. We will show how many there are. We will never show anyone's personal details.
The full method is on our methodology page. The roof guides that use these rows are roof cost by state and roof cost by material.
Expert sources we relied on
These are public building codes, laws, license boards, and trade and maker guides. We used them for the rules on this page. None of these groups has looked at or backed Home Repair Report. We just point to what they published.

Questions people ask
What is the Home Repair Cost Index?
It is one dated table of the public numbers we use for home repair costs. We start with roofs. Each row names its source, the time the data covers, the sample size if the source gives one, and the date we last checked it. The top row is the U.S. average for a new shingle roof: $31,871[1].
How often is it updated?
We plan to check every row every three months. We also check when a source puts out new data, like the yearly Cost vs Value report or the BLS pay data. Each row shows the date we last checked it, so you can see how fresh it is.
Does the Index have real roofer quotes?
Not yet. We have not collected any roofer quotes so far. We will not show a quote-based number until we have real quotes, shared with permission, and can say how many there are.
Can I use these numbers in my own article?
Yes. Please credit Home Repair Report, link to this page, and name the source in each row. For example, the gap between the most and least costly regions for a shingle roof was $11,262 in the 2025 data.
How we made this page
A computer helper (AI) found the public data. It also wrote the first draft.
Then we checked each number against its source. Each number links to that source.
The AI did not make up any number. We did not make up any person or quote.
We do not show experts or reviewers. We show the math, so you can check it.

Sources & how we calculated this
How we calculated this
Each Index row is a single figure copied from its source, with the period the source covers and the date we last checked it. We do not average sources together, adjust them for inflation, or fill gaps. Where a row is our math (a per square foot price, for example), it names the figures it comes from.
We plan to recheck every row every three months and whenever a source publishes new data. When a row changes, its checked date moves with it.
The full method is on our methodology page. See a mistake? Read our corrections policy.
