The short version
A new water heater costs about $1,348[1] on average in the U.S. Most jobs cost $882 to $1,826[1]. Labor is about half of that[1].
A tank heater tends to last about 6 to 12 years[2][2]. So if yours is that old, it is smart to plan ahead.

Which page do you need?
- Want to know what it costs? Read the cost guide. It covers each type, each tank size, and plumber pay in every state.
- Want your own number? Use the calculator. It takes under a minute.
- Not sure you need a new one? The fix or replace guide shows the warning signs and how long heaters last.

Which kind do you have?
Go look at your heater. You will likely see one of these four kinds. Each one costs a different amount to put in.
- A tall round tank. This is a tank heater. It runs on gas or on power. New ones cost $600 to $2,500[1].
- A small box on the wall. This is a tankless heater. It heats water only when you turn on a tap. It costs more up front: $1,400 to $3,900[1].
- A tank with a fan on top. This is a heat pump model. It pulls heat from the air in the room. Plan on $1,200 to $3,500[1].
- Panels on the roof. This is solar. It can cost $1,700 to $5,500[1] to put in.
Not sure? Look for a sticker on the side. It tells the fuel, the size in gallons, and often the year it was made.
Small signs worth a look
You do not need to be a plumber to spot trouble. Once a month, take a quick peek.
- Check the floor under the tank. It should be dry.
- Run hot water into a white cup. It should be clear, not brown.
- Listen when it heats. A soft hum is fine. Loud pops are a clue.
- Note how long a hot shower lasts. If it gets shorter, tell your plumber.
If you find one of these, read our fix or replace guide before you call. It helps you ask good questions.
Who to call
Call a licensed plumber. For a gas heater, they also work on the gas line and the vent. Labor alone for a tank swap runs $150 to $450[1].
In Florida, you can look up a plumber's license on the state's DBPR site[3]. It only takes a name or a license number.
Questions people ask
What is a tank water heater?
It is a heater that keeps hot water ready in a big tank. A new one put in costs $600[1] to $2,500[1].
How long does a plumber take to swap a tank?
HomeAdvisor says a standard tank takes about 1 to 3[1] hours to put in.
Do I need a permit for a new water heater?
Many towns ask for one. HomeAdvisor lists permits at $25[1] to $300[1]. Ask your city or county building office.
Should I wait until it breaks?
You can, but then you buy in a rush. A tank tends to last 6 to 12 years[2]. Near that age, it is smart to get prices while the old one still works.
