The short version

Pipe replacement averages $1,246[1] in the U.S. Most jobs cost $372 to $2,120[1][1]. A whole-house repipe costs much more.

Small leaks add up. The EPA says leaks in an average home can waste more than 9,300[2] gallons a year[2].

Small leak or big job?

Pipe problems come in two sizes. Knowing which one you have saves money.

Most people start with a fix. A repipe makes sense when leaks keep coming back.

Clues to watch for

Small drips add up. The EPA says a faucet dripping once a second can waste more than 3,000[2] gallons a year[2].

Old homes and lead

Homes built before 1986[4] are more likely to have lead pipes[4]. If your home is that old, ask your water company about testing. Ask your plumber what your pipes are made of.

In Florida, look up a plumber's license on the state DBPR site[5] before you hire.

What to do first when you find a leak

  1. Turn off the water at the main shut-off, or at the valve under the sink.
  2. Move things that can get wet out of the way.
  3. Take photos for your records and your insurance.
  4. Call a plumber and tell them what you saw.
